FAQ – “What oils are best for bruising?”

ANSWER FROM DR. ROARK – The best Essential Oils for bruising include Helichrysum, Cypress, Lavender, Copaiba, and Myrrh. I typically only use one to three of these Essential Oils at a time. Here are some guidelines:

• If the bruising JUST occurred within an hour or so, use Helichrysum and/or Lavender Essential Oil.

• If it is post-surgery—usually six to twelve hours later or longer—use Helichrysum and Myrrh Essential Oil.

• If there is no skin abrasion and it has been over 48 hours, use COPAIBA and Cypress Essential Oil. All of these should be diluted for your little dogs to about 1–2%.

FAQ – “Are there any problems using Essential Oils during Anesthesia?”

ANSWER FROM DR. ROARK – Oils do not typically interfere with anesthesia, although they may enhance the effects of it, so I recommend discontinuing 24 hours prior to the procedure. After pulling teeth, Copaiba, Frankincense, and Myrrh Essential Oils are all helpful for topical use. If you can give them internally, or orally mixed with food, that would be the best option, although topically would give some good effects as well. The amount depends on the weight of the dog. Usually one drop of each is plenty, but if you have a small dog, diluting first may be needed.

FAQ – “What are some good Essential Oils for after-surgery support?”

ANSWER FROM DR. ROARK – Immediately after any surgery, I recommend Frankincense and Copaiba Essential Oils internally (one drop each two to three times daily, with food or on a yummy treat).

Topically, you may apply diluted Myrrh and Helichrysum Essential Oils around the surgical site (not directly on the suture line), and once the sutures are removed, you can use a mixture of diluted Massage Blend, Frankincense, and Copaiba Essential Oils.
